Have you ever just stopped what you are doing, closed your eyes and just listened? What can you hear? The birds chirping or dogs barking outside? Planes flying in the sky? Rain?Maybe kids playing in the street or even the sound of your own heartbeat? Listening out for these little things can actually help distract us when we sometimes get too deep in our own heads, thoughts and feelings, or when the day feels like it is maybe a bit too much.
If you are like me, at every point in the day I have a number of things floating in my head. This could be things I need to get done, bills I need to pay, classes I need to take, work I have to do and even what to make for dinner and lunch. Because of this I actually forget to breathe sometimes...let alone DEEP breathing. As weird as that is to say, when most of us get stressed or in our deep in our own thoughts, we actually forget to breathe deeply.
I have been told that deep breathing actually makes your brain work at a higher level, therefore when we are under stress and are not deep breathing we are actually constricting our brain capacity which could mean we may not be working to our full potential.
Due to COVID-19 most of us have experienced being stuck in the house with no where to go and lets be real...it has been pretty hard to stay sane. But in a way it seems that everything is a bit more quiet and peaceful despite all the devastation that is going on around the world at the moment, as weird as that is to say. What I am trying to say is appreciate a time of quiet, where there is less cars on the road, more people inside and less noise outside your window. Use this time to be aware of yourself in the world. Stop and breathe. Go outside and really appreciate being able to hear the birds, the leaves on the trees dancing in the cool breeze. Breathe clean oxygen in and breathe out any negative thoughts and feelings. If you are stuck inside then close your eyes for a moment and listen to your heartbeat. Really listen. If you get distracted with other things in your home bring your attention back to your heart.
Take a break for 5 Mins now and clear your mind!
